The short answer is, if you want to excel in your leadership role, influence executives, and don’t already have a neutral sounding board, then you need a coach. A Harvard Business Review survey found that coaches are most frequently engaged for three reasons:
- Develop high potentials or facilitate transition
- Act as a sounding board
- Address derailing behavior
That said, everyone has room to improve. We work together to uncover what’s holding you back in any area—whether that’s big or small—and overcome it in a positive and powerful way.
Anna will help you improve the way you interact with colleagues, superiors, and direct reports so that you can be a more effective leader. That may mean working on your communication skills, physical presence, or relationship building. People bring innovation to companies; you must be able to lead them effectively if you hope to lead your organization in the marketplace.
The average engagement lasts about six months. Sometimes engagements will be renewed from year to year, when there is a new, specific issue to address. Anna doesn’t believe in lifelong coaching. Her engagements have a defined process and set outcomes.
The time commitment depends on the needs of the client and the organization. Six months to a year is average for an engagement; some clients will hire Anna for a series of engagements over the course of several years. As much as possible, Anna travels to meet with clients in person monthly or quarterly to capitalize on the benefits of in-person consultations.
It’s not uncommon for a company to engage a coach for a leader, and that leader thinks she’s in danger of being fired. In reality, an imminent firing couldn’t be further from the truth! If you’ve been offered a coach, it’s because your organization believes in your abilities and wants to help you reach your full potential. You may be 100% right about a problem or issue, but if you can’t present your ideas in a manner that your audience can understand and accept, you are dead in the water. Your professional reputation only stands to gain from the experience.
Yes, all communications between Anna and the client are private. Even if your direct boss hired Anna to coach you, the sessions are always confidential to ensure a strong and productive coaching relationship.
At the outset of the engagement, all involved parties agree upon a well-defined outcome or set of outcomes. At set intervals during the coaching engagement, Anna will contact the stakeholders and ask them to assess how the client is progressing toward the stated goals. She looks for general feedback and specific examples, and uses those to refine the coaching process where needed. All interactions between the client and Anna are kept confidential.
